Chorionic villus sampling is a technique used to collect chorionic tissue (villi) from the trophoblast (future placenta). As the chorionic cells and foetal cells have a common origin, their analysis is equivalent to a direct foetal analysis and can permit diagnosis of all chromosomal abnormalities and many genetic diseases for which the DNA can be studied.
The analysis is performed between the 10th and 13th weeks, under continuous ultrasound guidance. It is usually painless and does not require any local anaesthesia or special preparation.
The harvested cells are analysed in two steps: one rapid step that provides an initial result within 48-72 hours and a second step performed after culture, with a final result after 3 weeks.
