An ultrasound scan performed in the 2nd trimester in order to study foetal anatomy and identify any congenital structural malformations. This morphological assessment is often combined with the most common cephalic, abdominal and limb biometric indicators and cervicometry (length of the cervical canal) and flow measurements in the uterine and umbilical blood vessels.
Morphological ultrasound, when performed by expert professionals using high-quality ultrasound equipment, allows the recognition of 80-90% of foetal malformations (depending, of course, on the system involved and the size of the abnormality), and is a useful tool for identifying situations at risk of premature birth and foetal growth problems.
