USERN INTERNATIONAL AWARDS FOR JUNIOR SCIENTISTS The Universal Scientific Education and Research Network (USERN http://usern.tums.ac.ir/) was inaugurated in 2015 aiming at the diffusion of science without borders through peaceful and humanitarian universal initiatives in the fields of education and research. Its membership includes some of the top 1% scientists from 21 scientific fields as advisory board members who manage and supervise the educational and research programs. There are more than 6,500 additional members from 65 countries. Thirteen Nobel Laureates and 340 top 1% scientists accepted to serve as advisory board members. The USERN prize is made of five international awards, amounting to 5000 $ each, which every year are bestowed upon junior researchers less than 40 years of age for any novel advancement or achievement in scientific education, research, or serving the humanity in five fields, including formal sciences, physical sciences, biological sciences, medical sciences, and social sciences. The International Festival for Awarding USERN prizes is held every year on November 10th in the World Science Day for Peace and Development.
4th International Festival of Pediatric Patients’ Paintings (IFPPP)
Children and adolescents with age of less than 18 years old, who were admitted in a hospital during their life, have been cordially invited to attend this festival and submit drawings inspired by their hospital experience. Two hundred selected drawings will be printed in the booklet of the Festival. The best 12 selected authors will be special guests in the Festival for the awards presentations on November 10.
European School of Genetic Medicine: www.eurogene.org
Since 1988 more than 7000 young geneticists, in particular physicians and biologists, have been trained by the European School of Genetic Medicine (ESGM). They come to Italy from everywhere in Europe, from the Southern rim of the Mediterranean sea, from the Middle East and from all over the world. ESGM is recognized and sponsored with scholarships by many Universities across Europe, by the European Society of Human Genetics (ESHG) and by other scientific societies. ESGM is therefore having a tremendous impact on the practice and research in human/medical genetics far beyond Europe.
Primary immunodeficiency diseases (PIDs) https://www.sciencedirect.com/topics/immunology-and-microbiology/primary-immunodeficiency
PIDs are a heterogeneous group of inherited disorders with defects in one or more components of the immune system. Some of these disorders have a frequency of 10-fold higher the “Calabria Greca” with respect to other parts of Italy. Monogenic PID may provide unique opportunities to uncover the genetic bases and mechanisms of complex autoimmune disorders (AID), the study of which has already helped to unravel the pathways that drive autoimmunity. The PID course organized in conjunction with the annual USERN meeting addresses the need to increase awareness of these conditions worldwide and also to define the resource requirements for diagnosis, genetic counseling and treatment.
